George Ward Takes on the Manchester Marathon for a Special Cause

On April 19th, George Ward will be taking on the incredible challenge of the Manchester Marathon — and he’s doing it for something far bigger than the finish line.

George is running to raise vital funds for St Francis Special School, a truly remarkable place that supports children and young people aged 2 to 19 with a wide range of special educational needs. These include complex physical and medical conditions, social communication difficulties, and severe or profound learning challenges.

This cause is deeply personal.

George’s 9-year-old nephew, Oscar, has attended St Francis for the past seven years. Oscar lives with complex medical needs and a life-limiting condition, and the care, support, and education he receives at the school have made a genuine, measurable difference to his life.

At St Francis, Oscar’s needs are met through a fully holistic approach — with dedicated teaching staff, specialist support teams, nurses, and therapists all working together. More importantly, it’s a place where he is happy. He thrives being around his classmates and the incredible staff who support him every day.

The school is part of the The Lincoln Saints Federation, whose mission is to deliver truly inclusive education. Their aim is to prepare young people for life beyond school — whether that’s further education, employment, or supported independent living — ensuring every individual has the opportunity to take an active and confident role in society.

St Francis isn’t just a school — it’s a lifeline for families like Oscar’s.

George has set himself an ambitious target: £50 per mile across the full marathon distance. It’s a tough challenge, but one that reflects just how important this cause is.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help support the incredible work being done by the school and its staff — and ultimately improve the lives of the children and families who rely on it.
